Big moves are happening in the world of tech manufacturing! Apple’s primary supplier, Foxconn, is prepping to start production of the iPhone 16 Pro series right from its Tamil Nadu facility in India. This marks yet another big step in Apple’s ongoing strategy to diversify production outside China.
Reports from PTI reveal that Foxconn has already poured in $31 million for new equipment at its Indian plant. Plus, in a massive cash infusion this August, Foxconn Singapore acquired over 1.2 billion shares of its Indian subsidiary, Foxconn Hon Hai Technology India, adding about $144 million to the unit. At the same time, at least three South Indian state governments have jumped in, offering incentives and land to Foxconn, hoping to lure more manufacturing to their areas.
Foxconn’s chairman Young Liu has hinted at how serious this expansion really is, stating the company has invested close to $10 billion in India so far. But it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. Recently, the company came under fire over reports that its Indian iPhone assembly plant excluded married women from certain job roles. This led India’s National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to investigate, with the labor department conducting a factory inspection in July.
Foxconn isn’t the only one betting big on India. Giants like Wistron, Tata Electronics, and Kaynes Technology are also expanding across the subcontinent, cementing India as a new electronics manufacturing hub.
